The Metcalf Institute Environmental Reporting Fellowships were made available to two minority journalists interested in learning basic science and reporting on the environment.
The Environmental Reporting Fellowships provided support to attend the
Annual Workshop for Journalists; four weeks of independent study at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography with science faculty mentorship; and a $28,000 stipend for 37 weeks to work as a reporter with a mentor at either a National Public Radio-member station or The Providence Journal, covering environment and some general assignment news. The fellowships did not include compensation for travel.
Applicants were required to have a minimum of two years' journalism experience, be a U.S. citizen, and could include science writers or reporters from any media.
Brandie Jefferson, a former intern at The Providence Journal, and Ayana Meade, an independent television producer, were awarded Metcalf Institute Environmental Reporting Fellowships for 2005-06. These reporters attended the Seventh Annual Workshop for Journalists and Ayana is now reporting at NPR-member station, WBUR, in Boston; Brandy completed her fellowship at The Providence Journal in mid-January 2006.
