The reporters will attend a week-long marine and environmental science immersion program at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography from June 10 to June 15, 2007.

The 2007 Metcalf Fellows are: Kate Cheney Davidson, freelance reporter, Berkeley, CA; Christine Dell'Amore, editor for National Geographic News, Washington, D.C.; Cynthia Henry, editorial writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA; Jeff Kart, environmental reporter for The Bay City Times, Bay City, MI; Elliott Kennerson, filmmaker, Bozeman, MT; Jason Margolis, technology correspondent for PRI's The World, Boston, MA; Amy Quinton, environmental reporter for New Hampshire Public Radio, Concord, NH; Julia Scott, reporter for San Mateo County Times, San Mateo, CA; Lori Townsend, reporter and Alaska News Nightly Anchor for Alaska Public Radio Network, Anchorage, AK; and Chelsea Wald, producer of Science Update Radio Show for American Association for the Advancement of Science, Washington, D.C.

The fellowship program, Coastal Impacts: Marine and Environmental Science for Journalists, gives reporters and editors exposure to the basic science underlying environmental news to help them improve the accuracy and clarity of science-based news reporting. The workshop includes research in the field and lab with scientists and graduate students and a public lecture and debate series that will focus on climate change.

The Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting was established in 1997 with funding from Belo Corp., The Providence Journal Foundation, the Washington Post's Philip L. Graham Fund, and the Telaka Foundation. The Metcalf Institute was named for the late publisher of The Providence Journal, Michael P. Metcalf.
