Welcome to Rhode Island, the Ocean State!

Sindya Bhanoo and Marina Giovannelli begin their Metcalf Fellowships in September with five weeks of independent study in environmental science at URI and the Graduate School of Oceanography. They will then cover science and environment stories for The New York Times and PRI's The World, respectively, from October through June 2010.

"The opportunity to learn from researchers and industry experts at the University of Rhode Island will add important context to my reporting," says Giovannelli.

Bhanoo adds, "This is a tremendous opportunity to hone and develop my skills as a science reporter and then apply them at The New York Times - a publication I've long admired."
